Death in a vacuum

If there's one thing substandard Golden Age cartoons taught me, it's that vacuum cleaners will devour you if given the chance.  Zombie apocalypse my eye!

Steady

Drew it while listening to Toonami bumper music (from the album Deep Space Bass).
Catgirl + schoolgirl outfit + dark sixties-ish color palette + evil robot = Japanese enough?

Leftovers from the faraway land of Emoticonia!

...I mean, DeviantArt.  I love the place (the space to spread out, anyway), I love the people (the ones I know, anyway), but darn if I don't feel compelled to accent every sentence with 30 pixels that approximate my inflection with varying degrees of success.

Die Walkitty

EDIT 3/10/11: Turnin' this in for a show!  Copious edits, and a vow never to ink a pic at 200 dpi again, ensue, in the hopes that I might get a prize for it.  People kept thinking the nondescript goblin below was a dog, so a dog now he be.

You Belong To My Heart

As sung by the lovely Dora Luz.  Happy Valentimes!

P.S. to fellow Bloggers: If my recent posts show up three or four times in your Dashboard or Reader just because I make tweaks here and there, please let me know.  That would totally be obnoxious and compel me to refrain from editing my posts.

Drawing myself off a cliff!

Mmm, not quite so bad as all that.  I loosened up tremendously while watching Ignacio sketch a few nights ago.  No stories come of it (though who knows? there's new characters in the bunch), but some fresh gags did.  Thanks, dude.

Here's one final sketch at full page size, taken to color and lighting.  I wonder if I would have saved myself a buttload of time by doing cleanup.  Why not test that on the next one-off (someday)?

It took forever to scan these and I've still got animation to do.  But, man, does it ever feel good to share.

Full-color critter

Goodbye for now, frothy, problematic attempts at Milt Kahl mimicry. Hello, draftsmanship, basic appeal, tonal studies, and confidence!

(I apologize, however, if anyone finds this fox/bobcat's spacey expression creepy. Let's pretend she's in rapture to make it more interesting.)

Sitting in on Marshall's Visual Storytelling final on Wednesday was a rush 'cause there were so many great pitches from fun-loving animation students with no apparent pretensions. Thank you to the wonderful class of Fall 2010! I plan to work on stories after the weekend, once I've cleaned my squalorous apartment. Honest!

A deeply religious cartoon

This has been edited a couple times after its initial posting. Fact is, this is one of the few cases where I endorse "the airbrush look," although even then the lighting is quite simplified.

From the story again

Mood painting, with me still trying to figure out the kid's design. I don't want him to be generic, but I do want him to be simple and flexible.

By the way, it'll be a funny story, but it has to look creepy.

Xtreme Sketchdump Rallycross Oh-10

Sketchbook Pro continues to be an enormous boon (whatever that is).

Cleaned up from a thing in June or July or whatever:

The Witch

There's a picture like this on the wall of LCAD's new campus. But there's no background in it and I drew it with Photoshop's Pencil Tool at a relatively puny resolution, resulting in nasty pixilation. Had I known earlier how fun custom brushes in Sketchbook Pro can be, this might have gone in its place.

Accompanying soundtrack optional. Smoke added after lunch.

Happy Halloween!

RAAUGGH!!!

PURRRRRRPUUUUUUL!!!!!!

Compare and contrast with a color (and slight anatomy) tweak I cobbled together Last Nite:
Contrast is nice.

Baby's First Digital Painting

I'm going to assume that a good digital painting in Autodesk Sketchbook takes 4 hours or more to render to some impressionistic degree. 'Cause this took about two.
Comments welcome!

'Bye

I'm proud that I've been contributing to my blog so frequently for the past couple of months, but it's gotta stop. My summer was intended to be extremely productive, with major steps forward in my life and completed projects galore. Now, my days have no direction, and this is due in large part to the nonstop tweaking of one-off doodles. For whatever reason, I'm not content to share sketches. However, blogs are not portfolios -- unless they're portfolio blogs.

The last post contains some of my favorite, and least formulaic, drawings in a while, barring the pink one. So, to whoever's reading, hope you enjoyed them, and thanks for stickin' around. Unless I change my mind (and that's happened before), let's cap this with a few more drawings.

I know I'm gonna catch some heat for this one, someday, somehow...but you only live once.

The Return of Random Dump

Sometimes, with a red Col-Erase grinding into the paper, I feel like a monkey chiseling in the forms.

Cute girl + rasta hat = rasta hats made cute.

A cow or a giraffe? You decide! I am loath to color this creature and ruin the ambiguity therein.

This one looks very '80s. I tweaked the background and the abnormal length of her left arm after I posted it. For shame!
