See RANGO when you get the chance. It's a risky animated film that succeeds -- shrewd, silly, gritty, and charming, all at once. Hats off to Gore Verbinski for jumping into animation with such enthusiasm, to James Ward Byrkit and the story team for following him up, and to ILM -- who is pretty much "the studio" -- for the incredible, unconventionally appealing visuals, with photorealistic textures that actually work in their favor.

(Just one caution -- don't bring anyone under nine or maybe ten. This is a bit of a "hard PG.")

All right, kiddies...if you must know what's really been taking up my time while the wee hours are spent on pinups and such (I admit it takes the edge off), look no further. Presenting the first 15 seconds of "Lil' Hitch."

The first pass has some technical issues, although I'm mostly pleased with the character animation. More importantly, the story as a whole has many ridiculous twists and turns I am loath to spoil before it's ready to screen for an audience. Those of you from LCAD likely know how it goes already, but I'm dangling this carrot to whet your appetite for the final carrot cake of a film -- which, in an extremely optimistic situation, will be fully baked this December.

Cheesy metaphor is futile. Back to work!

Spotlight on Will Finn's blog (yeah, yeah)

I've heard Will Finn talk now and then about the homogenization of style in the animation industry, and last night he explored it more deeply. But his outlook is hopeful. "The notion of the Influence Map," says he, "may hold the keys, both to the problem and the solution..."

I've been looking plenty to animation's past and not enough to the present -- that is, to the artists AROUND me. I see so many of my dA and Blogger buddies regularly at school, while others are a measly few clicks away on the Internet. I explore with rabid enthusiasm. Then I leave the sites and go back to working from the professional talent I was already inspired by. Not for lack of respect, mind, but for being too easily distracted by the hype surrounding "the greats."

There are so many young, individualistic greats I see every day that I have yet to acknowledge in my own work, but they would be healthy influences indeed. Let me start by saying, thanks for bringing your art to the world and working to make animation and comics that much more inspiring.

P.S. If I don't successfully shoot out a cutesy cartoon by the end of the day, Happy Valentine's Day to all. May we all be with someone we love, sooner rather than later.

Mmm, not quite so bad as all that. I loosened up tremendously while watching Ignacio sketch a few nights ago. No stories come of it (though who knows? there's new characters in the bunch), but some fresh gags did. Thanks, dude.

Here's one final sketch at full page size, taken to color and lighting. I wonder if I would have saved myself a buttload of time by doing cleanup. Why not test that on the next one-off (someday)?

It took forever to scan these and I've still got animation to do. But, man, does it ever feel good to share.

No doodles today, but the animatic for my senior film is 99.9% complete (some dialogue needs to be swapped out) and I have gotten the go-ahead to start animating. Enjoy a storyboard drawing, kids!

Meanwhile, I rediscover what is likely the most unapologetically appealing Disney feature of the post-Walt era. It's clear that the new wave of Disney talent in the '80s was huge into Milt Kahl and Frank Thomas and all those guys, but for funny characters especially, they brought their own discoveries, like Tex Avery's vivid takes and Chuck Jones' strategically applied moving holds, to the table. Contemporary animators have consistently told me this and I am beginning to finally notice it.

So, to rewatch The Great Mouse Detective, a movie chock full of funny characters all drawn by animators exploring these influences with childlike glee, including an exceptionally gleeful Glen Keane drawing the villain...leaves me breathless.

If you forgot this frame was in the movie, chances are you need to watch it again.

Sitting in on Marshall's Visual Storytelling final on Wednesday was a rush 'cause there were so many great pitches from fun-loving animation students with no apparent pretensions. Thank you to the wonderful class of Fall 2010! I plan to work on stories after the weekend, once I've cleaned my squalorous apartment. Honest!

My 3D Computer Animation final! I got cozy with the Norman rig (no, not like that) and did my best to show how he'd react to seeing something inside a box. I was surprised how closely I could match Norman's poses to my original drawings.

Not exactly a quantum leap from the animal girls, but I like her that way. You get sex marketed to you so many ways these days that I prefer to carve out a niche for pinup girls you might like to know.

My only worry is that I don't explore enough shades of cute. There are subtler ways to do it than a ribbon and a fancy dress, for sure. But it was my deliberate choice to indulge in cuteness when designing Francesca.

God knows why, but I am having a hell of a time comfortably doing a pencil sketch these days. The piece below, which was of course done over hastily in Photoshop, is all right.

Here are some more designs I was able to concoct off the cuff with a gel pen, while with a Col-Erase I'd be drawing a bland spherical skull for two whole seconds and groping aimlessly for a pose afterwards. I didn't use to hate the process of drawing so much. What happened?

Another pinup. And with a white background, no less! Ah, well, if it offsets the bland in-joke of the last post (edit: DELETED) it can't it be all bad. Plus it's an okay stab at clean-up.

I've been fooling myself with two ideas lately: 1) that story drawing is harmful because it takes too much time away from my homework, and 2) that doodling is harmless. Usually, yes, doodling is harmless. It's obsessing over a doodle until it's a finished piece that's not so good -- especially when there's no story.

I love sharing my stuff and I'm thankful you're all around to see it, but there's only one way for me to blow you away and that's if I focus. So let me cocoon for a while and hopefully I can show off some new, and some improved, stories by the end of the year.

Also, Chris, thanks for pushing me to do small exercises. I'm slowly getting back into the habit as time permits -- plus I've drawn so many pinups that I'm getting tired, and I'm eager to know these characters. Believe it or not, watching Animaniacs with a friend recently made me a little more conscious about how cartoon characters can interact (even Mindy and Buttons' simple antics were highly entertaining).

My history with "dropping the blog," of course, is checkered. But if I know what's good for me I won't start it up till the time is right.

Tonight we embark on an adventure in clarity and simplicity. I love many pockets of the animation process, but at the moment I'm in love with storyboarding. These doodles helped me grease my palms. Forgive me if I left construction to the winds.

I'm proud that I've been contributing to my blog so frequently for the past couple of months, but it's gotta stop. My summer was intended to be extremely productive, with major steps forward in my life and completed projects galore. Now, my days have no direction, and this is due in large part to the nonstop tweaking of one-off doodles. For whatever reason, I'm not content to share sketches. However, blogs are not portfolios -- unless they're portfolio blogs.

The last post contains some of my favorite, and least formulaic, drawings in a while, barring the pink one. So, to whoever's reading, hope you enjoyed them, and thanks for stickin' around. Unless I change my mind (and that's happened before), let's cap this with a few more drawings.

I know I'm gonna catch some heat for this one, someday, somehow...but you only live once.

As a further note, I don't want my blog to look oppressive or industrial. Just simple. Hence the black. It was one of the few new templates I could find that didn't put distracting fake shadows behind the pics, and I don't seem able to worm my way back into the old format.
